  1. The XFL has announced multiple betting partners, launched a new free-play gaming app (PlayXFL) and hired sports data company Genius Sports to provide integrity services. 'The XFL should be applauded for its proactive stance in engaging with the sports betting industry,' Chris.
  2. Live Betting/Mobile App: The XFL is supposed to be more fast-paced than a normal NFL game, but there will still be some downtime throughout. Live betting gives you a chance to stay engaged with the game, and win some money while doing it.

Set to begin immediately after the NFL season concludes, the XFL is doing its part in creating a longer football season for fans. A longer season equals more action for legal betting on the XFL - something that should be very well received despite this being an inaugural season.

Sharing its name with the defunct XFL that played a single season in 2001, the upcoming season for the revitalized XFL will introduce a cleaner, quicker approach to its predecessor and the rivaling NFL.

This guide will help sports bettors of all types capitalize on America’s newest professional football league in the inaugural 2020 season. We provided recommended XFL betting sites, the history, and the latest trends of the XFL, plus any extra information and resources needed to maximize bankroll throughout the season.

Is it legal to bet on the XFL?

The XFL offers a unique opportunity to fans for betting.

First, like most sports, entertainment, and political wagering, Americans can gamble on outcomes in two ways: domestically and offshore. For certain fans, their home state may already allow locally licensed sports betting, meaning they can bet with a few clicks on a mobile app or by visiting their local sportsbook.

For everyone else, the second option is to gamble at offshore, online XFL betting sites. According to US federal gambling laws there are no prohibitions for placing bets at offshore sportsbooks that are operating legally within the industry.

However, what makes the XFL unique is its in-house connection to the sports betting world. League founder Vince McMahon is a minority stakeholder in DraftKings and the league has expressed an interest in running their fantasy football and betting operation through the service.

Not only that, but the league also hopes states with domestic sports betting will expand to every state that hosts a team, allowing the XFL to fully integrate sports wagering into the game.

What is the XFL?

Although it shares its name and trademark with the defunct 2001 iteration of the XFL, the 2020 revitalization of the league is all its own. On January 25, 2018, the newly formed Alpha Entertainment, a media investment conglomerate founded by McMahon, announced a revival of the XFL.

The XFL will have eight teams in its inaugural season, all of which are owned by the league, and will play over the course of a 10-week season with a two-week postseason. The XFL will not allow cheerleaders, political protests, or convicted felons because, as McMahon put it: “people don't want social and political issues coming into play when they are trying to be entertained.” However, players will not be barred from using cannabis, nor will they be tested for it.

Aside from trying to make the XFL more compact on the outside, the league’s goal is to also make their game runtimes more concise, too. Originally shooting for a two-hour window, the XFL now plans to finish their game in less than two-and-a-half hours. For comparison, a standard NFL game runs a little over three hours.

XFL teams

The first season of the XFL will feature eight teams, split up evenly into a Western and Eastern Conference. The league has also already started to plan their expansion, listing a future second Dallas team as the ninth squad overall.

Western Conference

  • Dallas Renegades
  • Houston Roughnecks
  • Los Angeles Wildcats
  • Seattle Dragons

Eastern Conference

  • DC Defenders
  • New York Guardians
  • Louis BattleHawks
  • Tampa Bay Vipers

Practice Squad

  • Dallas

Future teams

  • Additional Dallas team TBA

The 2020 XFL draft format

Before the start of the draft in October, coaches submitted their lists of preferred quarterbacks. After the submissions, the league allocated each team one “tier 1” QB to each of the eight teams.

After the quarterback allocation, the official draft began. Done through a snake format similar to fantasy football drafts, each phase of the draft featured a different selection of specifics positions.

  • Phase 1: 10 rounds for offensive skill positions (quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends)
  • Phase 2: 10 rounds for offensive linemen (offensive tackles, guards, and centers)
  • Phase 3: 10 rounds for the defensive front seven (defensive linemen and linebackers)
  • Phase 4: 10 rounds for defensive backs (cornerbacks and safeties)
  • Phase 5: 30 rounds for the open draft (any position, including special teams)

Important XFL dates

  • Draft: October 15-16, 2019
  • Season begins: February 8, 2020
  • Championship game: April 26, 2020 - canceled

Bets defined

  • Point spread- the set margin of victory needed for the favored team. (ex. Dallas -5.5; Dallas must win by 6 or more.)
  • Money line- a bet solely on the winner and loser of the matchup in which odds determine the payout for the winning team. (ex. New York -300; a $300 bet on New York’s win would payout $100.)
  • Over/under- the total number of points expected to be scored by one or both teams for a specific time frame. (ex. over/under 49.5 total points for Tampa Bay vs. Houston; betting on the over means a prediction of 50 or more points.)
  • Prop bet- bets made on anything not directly affecting the outcome of the game. (ex. total number of times the DC quarterback is sacked.)
  • Parlay- betting on multiple lines in an attempt to earn a larger payout. All bets must win for the bet to pay.
  • Future- bets made as long-term predictions. (ex. Los Angeles +225 for the XFL Championship.)

The NFL, as a league, is unlikely to have any realistic competitor during its regular months of operation. It’s one of the most drama-rich sports in the world, and if it’s not your favorite, it’s probably pretty darn close.

That hasn’t stopped the XFL from coming back, and its first season (again) will touch down in 2020 following the 2019 NFL season.

The main reason is due to the overwhelming popularity of professional football. After all, the AAF got off to a fine start, and had it not been for shoddy funding, it could still be running as well.

No matter, Vince McMahon and company are running a better ship this time around (supposedly). For the moment, this could mean we’ll have a pretty nice alternative for when the NFL season ends.

That isn’t just for entertainment purposes either. The top football betting websites have been quick to the draw with XFL odds, offering pricing for which of the eight teams will win the league’s inaugural championship.

There is more for XFL bettors to consider, though. Let’s go over all of the ways you can profit from the XFL and how to do so.

Before you really get serious about betting on the XFL, you should first know which sports betting websites offer XFL wagers and are safe to bet at.

A quick look at our safest sports betting sites will help you in that regard. You should also take a look at which betting sites have the fastest payouts.

For the XFL specifically, sticking with sites that offer pro football wagers and sportsbooks that have previously dealt with the AAF may be ideal for XFL betting.

SportsBetting.ag and MyBookie.ag are probably the two best options in that regard.

SportsBetting.ag was pretty notorious for pushing out AAF betting lines when that league was still up and functioning, while MyBookie has offered all kinds of prop bets for the AAF and other entities in the past.

For prop bets, early lines, excellent odds, and fast payouts, those are the two sites I’d suggest for betting on the XFL in 2020.

Get to Know the Teams

The XFL started releasing their player pool prior to the league’s first official XFL Draft, but bettors were patiently waiting to see where those prospects would actually be playing.

XFL title odds were out long before that, but there wasn’t any way of betting on the teams with much confidence. That changed with the XFL Draft going down not that long ago. Now that it’s a thing of the past, bettors should have a rough idea as to how to grade these teams based on the talent they’ve brought onto their respective rosters.

There will be days ahead where we dive into each roster a little deeper but, with training camp still months away and roster cuts coming after that, it might be too early to get comfortable.

You should definitely get a head start on this part of the XFL betting process, though. You can do that by checking out each team’s roster on the XFL website.

At first glance, the top teams appear to be the Dallas Renegades and DC Defenders. I’m not sure if flash or substance will win out in the XFL, but both of these teams got two of the more proven quarterbacks in Landry Jones (Dallas) and Cardale Jones (DC).

I would have to imagine running an offense and threatening defenses down the field is something good teams will be able to do. Both of these teams also have quality coaching, too, with Oklahoma legend Bob Stoops manning the sidelines for the Renegades and Pep Hamilton calling the shots for the Defenders.

If these teams aren’t quite as effective at throwing the football as I think they will be, maybe they can just run over everyone. Cameron Artis-Payne and Donnel Pumphrey give both running games some juice, which may then only put an onus on either team’s defense.

Again, it’s a little early to try to assess all of these rosters at the moment. The rosters are far from final. Some players could get hurt and other big names (*cough* Johnny Manziel *cough*) could still be added to the league.

That being said, I’d certainly spend some time getting to know all eight of these franchises.

Your team-by-team research may end up coinciding with the latest XFL odds, but if possible, I’d do much of that before allowing the top football betting sites to alter your perception of the league.

Once ready, though, it may be helpful to go back and look at the initial XFL title odds from an old breakdown of mine. Some of that advice there still applies, but the fact that we now have actual people assigned to these teams should have those odds altered quite a bit.

The main hiccup is that sports betting sites remove odds like this pretty frequently, either to adjust them or to just keep the bet away until they have a better grasp of each team’s value. Relevancy could also have something to do with it, as some sportsbooks may not love the idea of keeping wagers live if nobody is actively wagering on them.

Regardless, you’ll want to check out the most updated XFL odds, compare prices at your favorite XFL betting sites, then consider placing an early bet.

Take Some Risks

A huge piece of advice for betting on the XFL is that you need to be open to taking on some risk. I’ll be interested to see if there are any fun XFL prop bets in addition to the title odds, but you’re working with eight teams that could compete for a championship.

The odds and your own breakdown of all eight rosters will only get you so far, so taking a shot at an upside bet or two may end up being worth your time.

If you remember when the Alliance of American Football first started up last year, there were some favorites based on coaching and overall talent. Some of them were major whiffs and were looking like obvious failures if the league hadn’t quit on everyone out of nowhere.

Favorites are usually favorites for a reason, but this isn’t the NFL with the New England Patriots or baseball with the Houston Astros.

The top football sportsbooks are basically going off of name recognition just like everyone else. If you can do the research to get some type of edge (coaching strategy, offensive system or philosophy, players coming to the league, etc.), then perhaps you can take a shot you otherwise wouldn’t.

That might be a good idea. Nobody knows the correct way to bet on the XFL yet. And if the pricing leaves the door open to crazy upside, bettors need to consider it.

Lastly, there may also be the option of betting on the XFL from a daily fantasy football perspective. Fantasy sports aren’t true betting like sports betting is, but you’re still risking money to win some back, right?

Due to that, you’ll want to research as much as possible, build good XFL DFS lineups, and win tournaments.

All of that is easier said than done, especially since nobody really has a clue how to look at this league just yet. But that’s also where your betting edge lies.

The top pro football sportsbooks offered XFL title odds well before the first ever XFL Draft. As in, you could bet on which of the eight teams won the XFL championship before a single living, breathing human had been officially added to their roster.

Pretty wild, right?

Even though the draft is in the books and we can start formulating our XFL title bets, this league is still insanely wide open. That’s going to be the case initially, at least from an XFL sports betting perspective. It’s fair to assume the same for XFL daily fantasy football.

Gain an edge and you just might win big. To do that, be sure to hit up our blog for the latest XFL betting advice, as weekly lines should give you the best window into how games (and player stats) will play out.

Summary

Betting on the XFL is going to feel new and different. That’s because it is.

I tried to figure out who would win the AAF title last year, and that call blew up in my face. Not long after, though, I was making picks using betting lines at SportsBetting.ag and other football betting sites, and my predictions weren’t half bad.

The point is, it can be worth it to take a shot at a high upside play early on because things will even out eventually, and everyone will be on the same playing field. Over time, the weekly XFL betting will become a little easier, too.

To get started, though, bettors need to get serious about their player and team research, hunt for value when XFL odds pop up, and also test the waters of all forms of XFL betting.

This is a brand new, exciting market for pro football. It’ll probably be volatile at first, but that doesn’t necessarily have to equate to losing for all bettors.

Hopefully, this helps you collect your thoughts for the upcoming season. Be sure to keep an eye out for more XFL betting blogs in the future and for all of your sports betting needs, check out our sports betting guide for the latest odds, predictions, and more.
